Focus, focus, focus

Hi!  I’m still here.  It’s been a long, cold and gray winter in southern Ontario and the inspiration to work has been coming in fits and starts (more fits than starts!).  My studio is a little cold this time of year and the natural light that I adore working with seems to quickly dwindle, if it comes at all.

One of my biggest accomplishments has probably been applying for an art show in the summer.  I haven’t heard back yet, but it gives me something to work towards – at least until I know the outcome of my application.  One of my biggest revelations is that I have to consciously schedule time to work and make myself stick to it despite any adverse environmental conditions.  It’s not like it’s a burden to create, it’s that same old problem of “chores” needing done, sitting at the back of my brain somewhere nagging me to take care of things.  You know what I’m talking about.  Laundry, dishes, dog walks, groceries, straightening up.  There are standing, everyday things on the list and then always two or three extras that need attention.  I need to work harder against giving into the nagging and stay focused.  The difficulty is having only one day off a week where I have the house to myself and only interruptions that I create.  Unfortunately, I interrupt myself a lot to take advantage of no one else around to get underfoot while I go about my household business.

Anyway, enough excuses.  Time to get to work.  Here’s one of the few pieces I’ve managed to get done over the past three months!

Phase II

Phase II took a little longer than I had anticipated, what with the holidays that are never the free-wheelin’ break time I anticipate they are going to be.  However, I did manage to organize my space a wee bit and get it to a place where I could at least pull out some of my material and fool around.  I’ve not produced anything new, but the creative juices are starting to flow, thank heavens.  My next task is to buy myself a proper table to work at.  When I was working in my old bedroom, I would lean the frames against my french doors (excellent light anyway) and hunker down on the ground to arrange my metal pieces and twist in the wire.  I think they call it a “labour of love?”  I was very productive but my poor back paid the price, as did my partner who had to hear me whine about it pretty much daily.  A new mattress has solved some of the problem as has the fact that I haven’t worked on a piece for a month! That’s all about to change though, and I couldn’t be happier!

I suppose it’s beginning to resemble an artist’s space…

Temporarily on the floor – again. My back should be begging for mercy by next week!

Phase I

At long last I’m getting around to posting photos of my new studio space without any bells and whistles.

I had intended on getting a photo of the studio totally empty, but with the chaos of the move to this new house and the need to stuff things wherever possible so that we could engineer paths to get around, I ended up with a bit of initiation clutter!  Still, it’s very much bare bones and I’m so looking forward to getting it organized (and getting my life back in order so I’m able to create!).

Those big, ugly shelves are going to be out of there as they take up the entire exposed brick wall, and really the only walled space big enough to work against.  The other brick wall is where I come up the old, wooden ladder to the attic space.  I admit it kind of makes me feel like a kid in a fort, and I love it!

I’ll be rolling the area rug out to help prevent my rusted metal from falling through the cracks in the floor boards.  My partner insists that he also wants to use the space as a man cave the odd time, so I have to be pretty clever about how I design the space.  The floor area isn’t bad but as you can see, the ceiling is sloped on both sides so it limits usable space – unless we’re talking storage.

I’ll keep you posted on how it’s shaping up and try to take pictures along the way…..  These are crazy times!
